About Me:
I am a man of deep interests; when I become interested in something I tend to passionately learn all I can about it. I find international politics and military history fascinating; eventually I'd like to teach political science - or more specifically international relations - at the undergraduate level.
While I enjoy staying in, I have no problem with going out and doing interesting things. Of course, I'd enjoy having someone to go out and do interesting things *with*. Life's too short to do it alone.
I suppose, given my imagination, that I could be called a "dreamer", but "storyteller" might be a more accurate descriptor. I like to write creatively, both short stories and scripts for the stage or audio dramas (think Orson Welles' War of the Worlds broadcast). I've been involved in theatre for most of my life, and have done pretty much every job associated with live productions, from writing to acting to directing to all manner of tech work. I love science fiction and acquired a taste for horror during college. I suppose it's not a coincidence that I also have a distinct, ironic, and often dark sense of humor.
I spend a lot of my free time enjoying movies or books and playing computer games. However, gaming isn't just simple recreation for me: I love the intellectual exercise of (conceptually) taking games apart, seeing what makes them tick, and figuring out how they can best be employed for whatever their purpose. I spent a year in DC working on wargames for DOD, and using simulations as teaching tools is likely to be part of my research in grad school.
If I've not scared you off, shoot me an email. (I'm reserved and a bit shy with people I don't know, which makes it hard for me to make the first move.) Nothing ventured, nothing gained, right?
I have an affectionate young rescue cat named Nyx.
I'm definitely more of a cat person than a dog person; I have nothing against dogs - I like both - it's just cats tend to be more self-sufficient.
I can frequently be found at Firefly in St. Andrews. Further afield, I love Minnesota and the North Woods.
International politics, especially in terms of security issues. Science fiction. Creative writing. Seriously thinking about the structure, design, development, and execution of games (computer, board, card, wargame/simulation, etc).
I am an avid computer gamer (strategy games, shooters, and survival horror for the most part). My dad brought me up as a connoisseur of movies. I also enjoy running about with Nerf guns, doing things like Humans vs Zombies - good exercise, good fun.
For fun, "Strange Victory: Hitler's Conquest of France", by Earnest R. May. I devour a newspaper pretty much every day.
I am a freelance international relations analyst and writer, specializing in security and intelligence matters.
My ancestors came from northern and central Europe: my family tree definitely spans Prussia, Sweden, Wales, and Scotland, but I'm fairly certain that's not all. - My Interests:
